Well I guess I'm really unlucky, because all the gold items I've gotten from chests so far were alot less than 600g. They were like 250g. Hmm, I guess you get more by selling them to other players.

I find them to be improvements, and so do many others. While you might not like the idea of chests, there are another 3 bot users that are getting annoyed with having to change up their coding again.
I for one like the chests. It helps alot with item unlocking, and rune unlocking. I like it better this way, as now my henchies will no longer take up my chest items... Many other reasons for liking it, but i don't feel like typing much more on this subject.
So, when you get a superior rune of absorbtion(sp?) or rune of vigor, come back and tell me how much you love the chests...
Green, boss named items with perfected mods have now been added to the game. Peachy ^.^
First people complain about the so called "Grind", and now they complain about the economy finaly being able to be a bit more fixed with better gold sinks (Or so i think)... I just don't like this part of the community much.

Maybe they made it this way to give a beter chance for good items instead of the extreme low drops u got from most chests before.
Ok the keys are expensive but still monsters drop keys to.
Why do ppl always complain when there's something new implemented.
Please dont whine and play the game.
Be a sport

I like the fact they spaced out chests more, it was rediculous doing drake runs in Kryta and being able to "farm" like 10 or 12 chests in the area. Now it's down to a more respectable amount (I believe one Kryta key chest and 3 or 4 regular chests). People may complain about it, but how often in real life or even fantasy novels (AD&D, etc) do you actually find chests full of "uber" items laying about unguarded? I for one welcome the key/chest addition. Now it actually makes exploring areas more fun instead of plain old hack-n-slash boredom.

I like the idea, what I dislike though is that 90% of the time the chest item is less then 600 gold (750 in SF)

i agree with gosl and Gerbill. if keys are going to cost 600 gold, then most of the chests need to stop giving out crappy purple items that no one will bother to buy
or if they are going to keep giving out said crappy purple items, then any NPC merchant in the game should automatically pay at least 600 gold for the crappy purple item that has came out of an unlocked chest
i've opened a lot of chests, and got more crappy purple items then i can count. it's a huge waste of my money. when i bought a whackload of keys i was not aware i'd be flushing all that cash down the toilet.

I've opened rougly 20 Shiverpeak chests, half the drops were gold, half the drops were blue or purple, I made approx 90K off them thanks to superior rune armors.
I've had 6 keys drop from creatures, I've held on to two excellent gold bows and ditched the rest.
I'm all for the chests.

Chests can drop:
- Junk items
- Max items with decent/good mods (like wands with energy while above 50%)
- Good/max components you can salvage
It's a gamble, a casino. You can get very sweet items (I got a couple of those), as well as a buttload of junk (I got that too). With the general increase of item drops in GF/SF, the highend items will be become easier to get.
Chests are used as:
- A gold sink (yes, they were *designed* to make you spent your gold on a gamble)
- A way to ensure the best items/components drop at a decent ratio to the 'standard' player (read: non-farmer), so as to keep inflation under control.
ANet can tweak the global chest drop rate, and they can implement hidden auto-nerfs of your own drops (drop quality decreasing slowly if you're a gambleholic). It's a server change, so they can do it on the fly, without the need to streamline a patch. Therefore ANet can either inject more good items to balance out farming activities, or make this gamble less/more exciting than monster farming.

Mhm, in my previous post I said how items in it are under 600 gold most of the time.. but it's mainly a gold sink.. and I agree here that IF you find that one excellent item.. then you'll be either rich or really happy with your new item.
And if you'd only get items that are roughly around 600.. then it'd be too good..
so you'll have to choose..
Spend money on keys, to have a higher chance on getting max items
or don't spend money and wait till it finally drops maybe one time..
Eventhough I nearly pull my hair out when I get a stupid minor rune out of them like 5 times in a row.. I'll still buy the keys mainly because that way I'll have a higher chance in getting excellent weapons or mods, or perhaps a sup vigor or absorbtion rune.

If they did that they would only encourage power gamers to farm the chests.
Like Frog said above, it's a casino. A casino wouldn't be running if for every pull of the slot machine you got your money back or more. You loose money unless you hit the big win.
If the chests dropped items values at at least 600gp, you would find me and a ton of people buying keys, going on runs, selling and repeating to make money when they get an uber item. There would be no stopping it and would cause diaster on the economy since it would put even more money in your pockets.
I guess one good point would be the uber rare upgrades would become less rare if that happened.

luck is all I can say.
so far I've opened about 15 chests.
from which about 10 were purple runes minor and a few major all useless, the rest were some purple and gold weapons which were quite useless but at least I was able to sell those for like 500 gold to gain some of my spend money back

Oh I fully agree its a slot machine and luck is THE major factor with them, I wont advise anyone to invest 30K in keys, its a reasonable chance at getting something really nice or decent for not too much money.

I've gotten two Minor Vigors, as well as such useless items as a Healing Ankh with +4 armor while attacking. Which is why chests are a good idea; people want to make money selling good items, so now they have to put in an investment to do so.

I love the new chests feature and I agree with FrogDevourer that it's all a gamble. Sure, you can wait for a key drop to open one of those chests, but are you really that patient? I know i'm not... I blew 5K on keys on the first day and I've only got about 20K in the bank, but I love the gamble...
Also, as far as gold sinks go, I can't imagine a better one. With the exception of superior absorb and vigor runes, most of the great items you find will be sold to other players, which introduces NO new money into the game, conversely, spending money on keys removes A LOT of money from the economy. Add to that the ability to reduce farming, and increasing the number of top end items in the game and I think we're onto a winner.
If I could make one change though i'd have to say reduce the number of chests. At the moment I come across 2-3 in practically every area I go to. That kinda removes some of the excitement of finding a chest, because they are pretty common.

1) They did this on purpose, to make it so you wouldn't have to spend alot of time trying to find a useful weapon. This was also how they solved the "unlocking" issue.
2)They created a gold sink based on items, which the game needed. This was also thier answer to the "auction house" we wanted. No need for it now, since items just became easier to get.
My only beef is the quality of some of the drops. Most of the ones I've gotten suck, and weren't worth the money I spent on the keys. (I don't mean worth in monetary value, I mean more of the "wasted my time" factor. I could have spent that money on something else.)
